Freedom of Religion

Posted by Darryl Aarbo — filed in Human Rights Law

The Supremes have been busy this week enforcing the Charter. All in a days a work I suppose. In the unanimous decision of Mouvement laïque québécois v. Saguenay (City), 2015 SCC 16 the Supreme Court of Canada said reciting a Catholic prayer at council meetings infringes on freedom of conscience and religion. Very likely to be a controversial decision because it arises from a smaller centre and represents the dominant religion, but image for a moment if the most popular mayor in the world, Mr. Neshi, who also happens to be an Ismaili Muslim, wanted to start each counsel meeting with a reading of the Quran. I am sure that may be viewed quite differently. There is a separation of Church and State that benefits us all.
