Dear Government of Alberta, Her Majesty’s Official Opposition, Members of the Legislative Assembly for the Province of Alberta,
On the issue of gay-straight alliances, I wish to refer you to a little piece of paper that we call the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the supreme law of Canada. Section 2 states:
2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:
(a) freedom of conscience and religion;
(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
(c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and
(d) freedom of association.
I note for your reference that section 2(a) has been interpreted to mean freedom from religion.
Further, any institution taking taxpayer money, even a dollar, is subject to this piece of paper.
All people, including the little ones, have the freedom to associate, they can assemble peacefully and they can talk about whatever they want. They can talk about being gay, straight, girls who want to be boys boys who want to be girls, they can talk about how mean Ms. Smith is in home room, they can talk about how their mom is totally unreasonable. The world will not end if you let children meet and talk about their feelings. Nobody is going to “turn them gay”, but letting them talk about what going on in their life may get them through to graduation.
What else is there to say?
