How do I prepare for my family law mediation?

How do I prepare for my family law mediation?

Posted by Olivier Fuldauer — filed in Mediation

A separation or divorce mediation can includes issues of parenting, support and property division. These are important topics and can be interrelated so how do we best prepare for a mediation of these issues?

If you are mediating parenting, be ready to discuss your parenting plan. A parenting plan should have your best ideas for parenting and consider all of the children’s needs and their schedule.

If you are mediating financial issues such as support or property questions, gather your financial documents and organize them for easy reference. Be prepared to discuss your needs and what you would like the future to look like.

Consider speaking to your own lawyer before attending mediation. Even if your mediator is a lawyer, the mediator cannot give legal advice to both sides of a dispute. That is where gaining an understanding of the law from your own lawyer is key to understanding your options.
